An active volcano in Costa Rica, Central America. It is 3,432 meters above sea level. It is the highest peak in Central America, and is located in the Guanacaste Mountains, about 30 km east-northeast of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. Volcanic activity has been active, and since 1723, when records are clear, major eruptions are known to have occurred in 1841, 1910, 1963, and 1967. In particular, the two-year eruption from 1963 caused great damage to the surrounding area due to the large amount of ash and sand that fell. From the summit, you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. [Tajima Hisashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
