A city that is mainly composed of residential areas. It often develops as a satellite city around a large city. Many people commute to work or school, and daily life generally depends on the core large city. Because it is nothing more than a place for commuters to sleep, it is sometimes called a commuter town, a Japanese-English term. In Japan, residential cities centered around Tokyo include Urawa, Omiya, Musashino, Kodaira, Koganei, Ichikawa, and Matsudo, while in the Hanshin region, Toyonaka, Ikeda, and Ashiya have developed around Osaka and Kobe. In other countries, new towns that combine housing and workplaces are designed. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
