Using a program developed for a specific computer or OS on a computer with a different environment. Generally, programs cannot be shared between environments with different OSs. If you want to run a program in a different environment, you need to rewrite part or all of the program, which is called porting. With emulation, you basically run the program without rewriting it, by creating a pseudo-other computer environment through software called an emulator. Software that creates virtual environments for multiple PCs on one computer is called a PC emulator, or virtualization software. Since the PC environment itself is emulated on virtualization software, the OS can be installed and run as is, rather than emulated. Macs equipped with Intel CPUs come with virtualization software called "Boot Camp," which allows you to install and use both Mac OS and Windows. Virtualization software includes "VMware," "VirtualBox," and "Parallels."

特定のコンピューターやOS向けに開発されたプログラムを、異なる環境のコンピューターで使うこと。一般的には、OSなどが異なる環境では、プログラムを共用できない。プログラムを異なる環境で動かしたいときは、プログラムの一部やすべてを書き換えてつくり直す必要があり、これを移植という。エミュレーションでは、基本的にはプログラムを書き換えずに、エミュレーターというソフトウェアを介して、疑似的に別のコンピューターの環境を作り出すことで、プログラムを動作させる。1台のコンピューターに複数のPCの仮想環境を作り出すソフトウェアをPCエミュレーター、または仮想化ソフトという。仮想化ソフト上では、PC環境そのものがエミュレートされるので、OSはエミュレーションではなく、OSをそのままインストールして実行できる。インテル社製のCPUを搭載するMacには、「Boot Camp」という仮想化ソフトが付属しており、Mac OSとWindowsを両方インストールして利用できる。仮想化ソフトには、「VMware」、「VirtualBox」「Parallels」などがある。
