A Russian novelist. Born as the son of a minor nobleman and a district police chief. He entered the literary world in 1901 with "Pasha Tumanov." At first he dealt with liberal themes, but around the time of the 1905 revolution he began to focus on sex, violence, and death, and argued for the meaninglessness of human life threatened by death. His advocacy of free love and his extreme individualism and hedonism, which boasted that no matter what people do, they are not responsible, attracted attention in Japan from the end of the Meiji period to the Taisho period. He influenced writers such as Kazuo Hirotsu. After the October Revolution he went into exile in Poland. His representative works include "Wife" (1904), "Death of Rande" (1904), "Sanin" (1907), and "The Last Line" (1912).
