Aquatic worm - Aquatic worm

Japanese:
Aquatic worm - Aquatic worm

A marine animal belonging to the family Polychaeta of the phylum Annelida. It has local names such as Kuromushi, Donbei, and Chinchiromushi. It is found in areas south of Mutsu Bay, and lives in U-shaped holes dug in the sand and mud of tidal flats. Its location is easy to find because it piles up noodle-like sand feces around one of the holes. Large ones are 30 cm long and 1.5 cm wide at the front, gradually tapering towards the rear. The body is made up of 17 setal segments, and each of the 7th to 17th setal segments has a pair of finely branched feather-like gills through which red blood flows. The head has no tentacles or eyes. The warty feet are small knobs, with needle-like setae on the dorsal legs and hook-like setae on the gastropod legs. The reproductive season is from April to September, when they lay agar-like egg masses about the size of chicken eggs on the bottom of the soil. Many eggs develop within the egg mass, and once they become larvae with about 10 segments, they swim out into the sea. In the Seto Inland Sea area, they are used as bait for fishing sea bream and flounder. A similar species, the sea urchin Abarenicola pacifica , has a body with 19 setous segments and 13 pairs of gills. It is found from Mie Prefecture northwards.
