A resort town and port city in the province of Naples in southern Italy. Population 70,317 (1981). Formerly called Stabiae. A water source since Roman times, it has 28 types of mineral springs. In 79 AD, it suffered the same fate as Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius erupted, but was rebuilt 10 years later. It was later ruled and plundered by foreign powers, and a fortress (Castello) was built on the seashore to protect the springs, hence the name. During the periods of the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, shipyards, aqueducts, and railways were built, laying the foundation for the city's current development as an industrial city (shipbuilding, machinery, textiles).
