He is the poster boy, so to speak, for educational picture books created by Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-94) for children between the ages of three and six. In this picture book, titled "Shaggy Peter," a boy with unkempt hair and long nails who disobeys his parents' orders, the book uses simple and explicit pictures and verse to depict scenes of horrible experiences suffered by various bratty children. Recently, some have strongly opposed this method of using fear to discipline children, from the standpoint of child psychology. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
