...The Mu'tazilas emerged in the same ideological climate. The first Mu'tazilas, Wāṣil ibn 'Atā' (699-748), are said to have advocated an intermediate state between faith (iman) and non-belief (kufr). The Mu'tazilas took the same ideologically and politically neutral stance as the Mur'jias, and while the Mur'jias were inclined toward law, they paved the way for theology.
