…He was born in Kashmir, North India, around the 5th century, and became a disciple of Go-nyū and studied the Mahābhāsāsasāstra. When Vasubandhu wrote the Abhidharma-Kashāstra, criticizing the Sarvastivada school from the standpoint of the Saṇḍarītāstra, he spent 12 years writing a refutation book, the Abhidharma-Sūtra, 80 volumes (also called the Kashāsāstra), and then attempted to meet Vasubandhu in person with several students to refute it. However, Vasubandhu avoided the confrontation and traveled to Central India, so the many wise men followed him to Central India, but on the way he fell ill and died near the country of Matītīfura (present-day Madāwar). …
