Japanese: タマシギ(玉鷸) - タマシギ

A general term for birds in the Rostratulidae family of the order Charadriiformes, or one of those species. This family consists of one genus and two species, one of which is found in the Old World and the other in South America. Both species are about 24 cm long and have a body shape similar to that of rails (order Grui). Their beaks are quite long and curve slightly downward at the tip. Females are more brightly colored than males and are slightly larger. They are often found in rice paddies and marshes, either together or in small groups, and do not migrate long distances. They are also similar to rails in their habit of hiding in the shade of grass, moving their tails while walking, and slightly dangling their legs when flying.

チドリ目タマシギ科Rostratulidaeの鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科は1属2種よりなり，1種は旧世界に，他の1種は南アメリカに分布する。2種とも全長24cmくらいで，体型はクイナ類(ツル目)に似ている。くちばしはかなり長く，先が少し下に曲がっている。雌のほうが雄よりもはでな色彩をしていて，体も少し大きい。水田や湿地に雄雌，または小群でいることが多く，長距離の渡りはしない。草の陰に隠れる習性，歩きながら尾を動かすこと，飛ぶときに脚を垂らしぎみにする点なども，クイナ類に似ている。
