Topos (English spelling)

Originally, it is a Greek word meaning a place. It does not simply mean a physical space, but since Aristotle, it has also meant a rhetorical place, that is, a basic form of argument when discussing something, or a place where topics are stored. In English, it simply means a common expression or theme. The reason this word became important in the fields of literature and thought was because thematic theory became active in structuralism.

元来は，場所を意味するギリシア語。単に物理学的な空間を意味するだけでなく，アリストテレス以来，修辞論上の場所，すなわち何かを論じる際の基本的論述形式，あるいは論題を蓄えている場所をもいう。英語ではズバリ月並みな表現・主題を意味する。この語が文学・思想の分野で重視されるようになったのは，構造主義においてテーマ論が活発になったためである。
