Many synthetic fibers are hydrophobic and are prone to static electricity due to friction, not only during the spinning and weaving processes but also after the product is made. This not only causes problems during processing, but also causes shocks to the human body when putting on and taking off the product due to discharge. Antistatic processing is used to prevent this static electricity from occurring. Surfactants are mainly used as antistatic agents. Cationic surfactants and nonionic surfactants are effective for synthetic fibers, while anionic surfactants are effective for regenerated cellulose-based chemical fibers. However, since these are mainly surface treatments and lack durability, a method of mixing conductive materials is also used.

合成繊維は疎水性のものが多く，紡糸，織布などの工程中だけでなく，製品化したあとまで，摩擦により静電気を帯電しやすく，加工上の障害のほか，製品を着脱するとき，放電によって人体にショックを与える。この静電気発生を防ぐために，帯電防止加工を行う。帯電防止剤には，おもに界面活性剤が使用される。合成繊維用としてはカチオン活性剤，非イオン活性剤，また再成セルロース系化学繊維用には，アニオン活性剤が有効である。なお，これらは表面加工が主体で耐久性に欠けるので，導電性材料を混入する方式も採用されている。
