One of the fiercest battles for cities during the German-Soviet War in World War II. The German army adopted a strategy of completely surrounding Leningrad, the second largest city in the Soviet Union in terms of political, strategic and economic importance, and starving it out. As a result, more than 3 million civilians were caught up in the war. First, land transportation was cut off in mid-September 1941, and by early November, sea transportation across the neighboring Lake Ladoga was also cut off, resulting in a complete encirclement. That year, an unusually cold wave hit the city, and the civilians were left in dire straits due to cold, hunger and disease, with 20,000 people dying in a single day.
