Kurizaku Misono - Chestnut miso

Japanese:
Kurizaku Misono - Chestnut miso
In the Middle Ages, orchards that offered chestnuts to the Emperor were particularly famous, with Tanba Sweet Chestnut Garden and Yamashiro Tawara Mikurusu. These orchards came under the jurisdiction of the Kurodo-dokoro (Kurodokoro Office), and a Mikurusu officer was appointed to each garden, and those who accompanied the chestnut offerings were called Kurikyu-onin (chestnut offerings). Every year in September of the lunar calendar, Tanba Sweet Chestnut Garden would bring one load of chestnuts in a four-legged pail, and on Gosechi (November of the lunar calendar), Tawara Mikurusu would bring 30 baskets of sweet chestnuts. The origins of this tradition are thought to lie in Sonoto, who was in charge of the propagation of fruit seeds as the Imperial Household Ministry's Garden and Pond Officer under the Ritsuryo system.
