The capital of the Yuan Dynasty, China. Forerunner of Beijing. The Mongol Empire seized this area, which was called Zhongdu, from the Jin Dynasty. In 1265, under Kublai Khan, the first emperor of the Mongol Empire, a new city was built on the northeast adjacent land, modeled on the size of the royal capital described in the Zhou Rites, and made it the national capital. This was Dadu, a long rectangle from north to south. Marco Polo and others reported it as Khanbalik (meaning the emperor's city). After a period when it was called Beiping in the early Ming Dynasty, it was made the national capital again during the reign of the third Ming emperor, Yongle, and was later renamed Beijing.

中国，元の首都。北京の前身。モンゴル帝国は，金から中都と称されたこの地を奪い，世祖フビライ・ハンの至元2 (1265) 年その北東隣接地に『周礼』に記されてある王都の規模を模範に新城を建設，国都とした。これが大都で，南北に長い長方形をなしていた。マルコ・ポーロらは，これをカンバリク (汗〈カン〉，皇帝の城の意) と伝えている。明初に北平 (ほくへい) と称された一時期を経て，明朝第3代の永楽帝のとき再び国都にされ，のち北京と改称された。
