A mixed heritage site in China that was registered in 1987. The mountain range, with its main peak Jade Huangding at an altitude of 1,533m, occupies the western end of the Luzhong Mountains in central Shandong Province, and the mountain range that is connected to it, has a circumference of about 80km. Its majestic shape can be seen from the North China Plain. Mount Tai is also called "Eastern Mountain," "Dai Mountain," or "Dai Zong," and during the Han dynasty was given the honorific title of "Taishan Fujun." It is also a sacred place in Taoism, and is worshiped as the first of the five "Five Mountains" (Taishan, Hengshan, Hengshan, Songshan, and Huashan). 1987年に登録された中国の世界遺産(複合遺産)。山東省中部、魯中山地の西端部を占める、標高1533mの玉皇頂を主峰とする山岳、及びそれに連なる山脈で、周長約80kmが登録範囲になっている。華北平原からは、その雄大な山容を望むことができる。泰山は「東岳」、「岱(たい)山」または「岱宗」ともいい、漢の時代には「泰山府君」という尊称で呼ばれた。また、道教の聖地で、5つの山「五岳」(泰山、衡山、恒山、嵩山、華山)の筆頭とされて信仰を集めた。道教では、泰山は「東岳天斉大生仁聖帝」(東岳大帝)という神である。また、俗説では、泰山は人間の生死、寿命、官位、死後の審判を司るとされ、生前の罪を処断し、罪を犯した者は地底の獄に送り懲罰するという、仏教の閻魔大王とよく似た冥府(死後の世界)の神と信じられてきた。さらに、秦の始皇帝が泰山で封禅(ほうぜん)の儀式を行って以来、泰山で行う封禅の儀式は皇帝の資格を得た者の最高の儀礼とされてきた。このように、泰山は古くから多様な信仰や儀式の対象となってきたことから、中国の歴史の中にたびたび登場する山である。泰山の山中には道教の聖地として玉皇閣、中国の三大宮殿建築の一つとされる正殿の天貺(てんきょう)殿がある岱廟や、泰刻石、経石峪金剛経、無字碑、紀泰山銘などの石刻などの旧跡がある。こうした信仰の一方で、風光明媚な景観や名勝旧跡が数多くあることから観光地としてもにぎわい、古くから整備された岱頂への約7000段の石段のほか、現在では中腹まで自動車道路が整備され、山頂までロープウェーが通じ、手軽に登ることができる山になっている。◇英名はMount Taishan。泰山は中国語ではタイシャンと発音する。
