...But nation-building did not go smoothly, and the Greater Somali movement also suffered a setback, leading to growing discontent within the country. In October 1969, President Shermarke was assassinated. In the same month, before a new president had been elected, the military staged a bloodless coup, and the Supreme Revolutionary Council, chaired by General Muḥammad Siad Barre (1919-95), took power. The council suspended the constitution and changed the country's name to the Somali Democratic Republic.
