…The son of a German military bandmaster and a Hungarian woman, Lehár studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, and after being drafted, he devoted himself to composing while serving as a military bandmaster. In 1902, he left the military to concentrate on composing and conducting, and achieved an unprecedented success in the history of operetta with “The Merry Widow,” which premiered in Vienna in 1905. After World War I, he lost popularity to popular music from America, but he regained it with a series of works he wrote for the famous tenor Richard Tauber (1891-1948), including “The Land of Smiles” (1929). …
