A system in which a representative is appointed from within the group to make pilgrimages to shrines and temples in distant locations. A daisanko that appoints a daisan is a general term for a religious group based on the faith of an individual. However, in groups with a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, such as the Ise group, the entire village may be a member of the group. The representative is chosen by lottery or by rotation, and brings money saved up within the group as contributions to the shrine or temple and travel expenses for the pilgrimage. The representative also distributes any ofuda (talismans) they receive to the members. Groups that go on mountain pilgrimages are required to observe strict abstinence in advance. In some places, temporary shelters and offerings of offerings are set up while the members are away, and people pray for safety by offering food in the form of a memorial meal. In urgent situations such as droughts, a daisan may be appointed regardless of whether there is a group or not.
