Proterozoic Era

This is the latter half of the Precambrian geological period, which is divided into the Old and New, and corresponds to the period from about 2.5 billion years ago to about 541 million years ago. The strata formed during the Proterozoic Era are called the Proterozoic. In the early period, only prokaryotes, such as blue-green algae, were known in the biological kingdom, but in the middle period, eukaryotes such as green algae appeared. In the late period, in addition to protozoa, various soft-bodied multicellular organisms that at first glance resemble cnidarians, coelenterates, annelids, and arthropods appeared. These fossils have been found all over the world and are called the Ediacaran fauna. Proterozoic strata are widely distributed in the shields of the world and contain thick iron ore layers, making them economically important. Thick layers of gravel formed by glacial action have developed in the Proterozoic strata from about 700 million years ago all over the world, and there was an ice age when the entire earth was covered by glaciers.

先カンブリア時代を新旧二分したときの後半の地質時代で、約25億年前から約5億4100万年前までの期間に相当する。原生代に形成された地層を原生界という。生物界では、早期には藍藻(らんそう)植物で代表される原核生物のみが知られるが、中期には緑藻などの真核生物が出現する。晩期には、原生動物に加え、一見すると刺胞動物、腔腸(こうちょう)動物、環形動物、節足動物などに似た多様な軟体性多細胞生物が出現した。これらの化石は世界各地で発見されており、エディアカラ動物相とよばれている。原生代の地層は世界の楯状地(たてじょうち)に広く分布し、厚い鉄鉱層を含むので経済的にも重要である。世界各地の約7億年前の原生代の地層には氷河作用で形成された厚い氷礫(ひょうれき)岩層が発達しており、地球全体が氷河で覆われるほどの氷河時代があった。
