(1) Platinum(II) tetrachloride H 2 [PtCl 4 ]. When platinum(II) chloride is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, it is obtained as a dark red solution. (2) Platinum(IV) hexachloride H 2 [PtCl 6 ]. Yellow, deliquescent crystals obtained from a hydrochloric acid solution of platinum(IV) chloride. Easily soluble in water and alcohol. A fairly strong divalent acid, various metal salts are known. It is used in platinum plating, photography, platinum mirrors, catalysts for the production of acetic acid, and catalysts for the production of sulfuric acid. A 10% aqueous solution of this acid usually produces a precipitate when added to an aqueous solution of alkaloids, so it is used as an alkaloid reagent.
