A port city in the Eastern Cape Province in the southern part of South Africa. Population: 304,000 (1991), metropolitan population: 853,000 (1991). Facing Algoa Bay in the Indian Ocean, it is a strategic location for rail, road and air routes, and is an export port for diamonds, wool and fruit. It is also a center of industrial production, including automobiles, electrical machinery, metal processing and woodworking. There are museums, art galleries and other cultural facilities, and the coast is known to white people living inland as a resort. After about 3,000 British immigrants settled in 1820, R. Donkin, the acting governor of the Cape Colony, built a stone pyramid in memory of his deceased wife Elizabeth, and named the new city after her.
