Born October 23, 1844. Walmer, Kent
[Died] 21 April 1930, Boar's Hill, Oxfordshire. British poet and critic. He excelled in the art of meter and paid close attention to the musical beauty of words. His representative works include Shorter Poems (5 volumes, 1890-94), New Poems (1929), and the long poem The Testament of Beauty (29). He also wrote many excellent critiques, including Milton's Prosody (1893) and John Keats (95). He was a friend of GM Hopkins, and the collection of their letters is also important. He also founded the Pure English Society, which aimed to improve the English language. He was Poet Laureate in 1913.

Brydges, Sir Samuel Egerton

Born: 30 November 1762, Wootton House, Kent
Died September 8, 1837. A British bibliographer and genealogist from near Geneva. He first became a barrister, then abandoned his profession to lead a quiet rural life. He also wrote poetry and novels, but he made a major contribution to bibliography through his research, study, and restoration of old English books ("Censura Literaria," 10 volumes, 1805-09).
