Born: August 9, 1896 in Moscow [Died] March 15, 1979. Cologne. An American dancer born in Russia. His real name was Leonid Fedorovich Miassin. After graduating from the Moscow Imperial Choreographic School, he joined S. Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1913. He started working as a choreographer in 1915, presenting works such as "Parade" (1917), "La Boutique Fantastique" (19), "The Three-Cornered Hat" (19), and "Pulcinella" (20), in which he also starred. He later became a guest choreographer for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, American Ballet Theater, and the Royal Ballet, and opened up a unique realm with his ballet-like works based on symphonies, such as "Coleartium" (33) based on Brahms's 4th Symphony and "Symphonie Fantastique" (36) by H. Berlioz (→Symphonic Ballet). He also choreographed and starred in the films "The Red Shoes" (48), "The Tales of Hoffmann" (51), and "A Neapolitan Feast" (53). He became a naturalized American citizen in 1944, but continued to work worldwide until his death, including founding the new Ballets de Monte Carlo in 1966.
