This uprising was centered around the Ikko sect Hontoku-ji Temple in Akiga, Harima Province (present-day Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture) and was part of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji Rebellion, which fought against Hashiba Hideyoshi. Akiga developed as a port town in the late Middle Ages. It was initially ruled by the magistrates of the Akamatsu clan, the guardians of Harima, but eventually an autonomous association was formed around the powerful Otonashiyu (chief priest) Miki clan. The Ikko sect expanded in the late 15th century, and in 1515 (Eisho 12), the Ikko sect temple Hontoku-ji Temple was founded as the center of the Harima religious group, and a temple town was formed within the temple. The Akiga chief priests, who had become followers, served Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple in the mid-16th century. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
