The term refers to hard stones, such as gemstones, agate, chalcedony, jasper, and lapis lazuli, and to items made of them. The plural form, pietre dure, refers to items made by combining several different types of gemstones. In European countries other than Italy, it is mistakenly used in the singular form to refer to panels made of small pieces of various types of gemstones combined according to a certain design. Seals, ornaments, and decorative caskets have been made from these gemstones since ancient times. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
