Johnson, R.

… Representative performers (who in most cases also wrote lyrics and composed music) include Blind Lemon Jefferson (1897-1930), who played the earliest guitar in the southern style, and Charlie Patton (1887?-1934); Leroy Carr (1905-35) and Peetie Wheatstraw (1902-41), who pioneered urbanization using the piano in the 1920s and 1930s; Big Bill Broonzy (1893-1958, guitar), who promoted band blues that incorporated jazz swing in the 1930s; Robert Johnson (1912?-38, guitar), who died young in the mid-1930s, with a strong southern sensibility and a premonition of the future; and T-Bone Walker, who developed the electric guitar style of blues in the postwar period. Examples include Walker (1910-75), Muddy Waters (1915-83), B.B. King (1925- ), and Lightnin' Hopkins (1912-82), who maintained a strong, unrefined southern sensibility amid the rapid changes in blues.
