An insect of the family Scarabaeidae in the order Coleoptera (illustration). Some males can reach a body length of over 5cm excluding the horns, and are popular for their sturdy, black-brown bodies. They are widely distributed throughout Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, China, India, and the Philippines. Although they are warm-climate beetles, it is said that those brought to Hokkaido as pets have become established in the wild. The adult's thoracic legs are well-designed for burrowing into the soil, and their claws at the tips are sharp, allowing them to support their weight on tree trunks.

甲虫目コガネムシ科の昆虫（イラスト）。雄では角を除く体長が5cm余りに達する個体があり，黒褐色のたくましさを感じさせる体から人気がある。日本全国のほか，朝鮮半島，台湾，中国，インド，フィリピンなどに広く分布する。暖地性の甲虫であるが，北海道ではペットとして運び込まれたものが野外にも定着しているといわれる。成虫の胸脚は土に潜るのにつごうよくできており，また先端のつめは鋭く，木の幹で体重を支えることができる。
