Mount Akaishi - Mount Akaishi

Japanese:
Mount Akaishi - Mount Akaishi

It is one of the main peaks of the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps) that run along the border between Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures. It is 3,121 meters above sea level. It is located in the Southern Alps National Park, and the area around the summit is a special protected area. The rocks that make up the main ridge are Mesozoic sandstone, and are called the Akaishi belt, sandwiched between tuff. To the east is the valley of the upper reaches of the Oi River in Shizuoka prefecture, and to the west is the valley of the Toyama River and Koshibu River, tributaries of the Tenryu River in Nagano prefecture. The mountain is a magnificent high peak, and the view from the summit is excellent. It is said that the place name Akaishi was derived from the red quartzite exposed in places, but in fact the name Akaishizawa was derived from the red rock exposure in the stream that originates on the southern foot of the mountain. The summit is gently flat, and there is a shrine on the top. Additionally, the eastern slope has a cirque-like topography created by a glacier. There is a shelter at the summit, but the mountain is deep and a minimum of two nights' stay is required to climb, so few climbers visit. The most common trailheads are Sawarajima on the Shizuoka side and Koshibu Onsen on the Ina side. Climbing from the Ina side requires repeated crossings of the Koshibu River, so skill and experience are required.
