Lourdes - Lourdes (English spelling)

A small town in the Hautes-Pyrenees department in the northern foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France. It is a scenic pilgrimage site at an altitude of 400 meters. Population 15,203 (1999). Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared to a poor girl named Bernadette in this town 18 times. As a result, a miraculous spring that heals illnesses gushed forth. This became world famous as the "water of Lourdes." Today, a beautiful neo-Gothic cathedral has been built over the cave where the spring is located, and every year, about 5 million pilgrims from all over the world gather here. A great number of sick people are brought here to seek healing, but at least they are said to enjoy the spiritual benefits of faith, love, patience, and gratitude.

フランス南西部、ピレネー山脈北麓(ほくろく)のオート・ピレネー県にある小さな町。標高400メートルの風光明媚(めいび)な巡礼地である。人口1万5203（1999）。1858年2月11日から7月16日まで18回、聖母マリアがこの町の貧しい少女ベルナデッドのもとに出現した。その結果、奇跡的な病気治療の霊泉が湧(わ)き出たという。これが「ルルドの水」として世界的に有名になった。現在、霊泉のある洞窟(どうくつ)の上に、新ゴシック風の美しい大聖堂が建てられ、毎年、世界各地から約500万人の巡礼者が集まる。そしておびただしい数の病人が運ばれてきて病気の治癒を求めていくが、少なくとも信仰、愛、忍耐、感謝という精神的な恩恵には浴するという。
