A city in the north of Hamadori, Fukushima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It faces the Pacific Ocean and is home to Matsukawaura. Nakamura, in the center, developed as a castle town for the Soma clan. It is the commercial center of the northern Soma region and is served by the Joban Line and the Joban Expressway. Harakama Port was a port of call for eastern shipping during the Edo period, but was opened as Soma Port in 1961 and designated an important port in 1974, with a large industrial complex being developed behind it. Matsukawaura cultivates seaweed and oysters and produces surf clams. Soma ware is a local specialty, and Nakamura Shrine is famous for its Nomaoi dance.
