Its origins are considered to lie with the German worker poet Wehrmacht and Eugène Pottier (1816-87), lyricist for The Internationale. During the Russian Revolution in the early 20th century, its concept was clarified as opposed to bourgeois literature, and in 1905 Lenin, in Party Organization and Party Literature, emphasized the need for "a literature openly linked to the proletariat."

…(1) The period of the October Revolution and the Civil War (1917-21) In the era of war communism, when supplies were scarce, there was no paper, and publishing was impossible, poets were the first to become enthusiastic about their work. Starting with Blok's epic poem 12 (1918), Mayakovsky, Yesenin, and others appeared, along with the Proletklit, and then the Kuznitsa school, which split off from it.
