Nara is a city in the northwest of Nara Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The city center developed as a temple town for Hozan-ji Temple halfway up Mt. Ikoma. It is a tourist base for the Kongo-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park, and is served by the Kintetsu Nara Line, Ikoma Line, and Hanna Road. It has become a residential area and its population is growing rapidly. The Kintetsu Keihanna Line (Ikoma - Gakken Nara Tomigaoka) opened in 2005. Nara is number one in the country for its specialty tea whisks, which originated in the Muromachi period. In Takayama in the north, the Kansai Culture and Academic Research City and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology were established in 1993, making it a cultural and academic city. 奈良県北西端の市。1971年市制。中心市街は生駒山中腹の宝山寺の門前町として発達,金剛生駒紀泉国定公園の観光基地で近鉄奈良線,生駒線,阪奈道路が通じ,住宅地化,人口増加が著しい。2005年に近鉄けいはんな線(生駒〜学研奈良登美ヶ丘)が開業。室町時代に起源をもつ特産の茶筅(ちゃせん)は全国一。北部の高山には,1993年関西文化学術研究都市,奈良先端科学技術大学院大学などができ,文化・学術都市となっている。53.15km2。11万8113人(2010)。
