The custom of carrying babies on one's back is widely seen in Asian countries, Africa, the South Pacific islands, and American Indian tribes, but not in Europe or the United States. The way babies are carried on the mother's back varies by region and tribe. For example, some African tribes place the baby on the mother's bottom, while American Indians hang a carrier from the mother's forehead to her back and tie the baby to it facing backwards. In Japan, children carried on one's back can already be seen on pottery from the middle Jomon period, clay figurines of people from the Kofun period, and in the "Annual Events Picture Scroll" from the late Heian period.
