Hideko Maehata

Japanese: 前畑秀子 - まえはたひでこ
Hideko Maehata

A swimmer who won an Olympic gold medal. Born in Hashimoto-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. In the 1932 (Showa 7) Los Angeles Olympic Games, she placed second in the 200-meter breaststroke, losing to Dennis (Australia). This was her first defeat since becoming an athlete, and until the Berlin Olympic Games four years later, she swam 20,000 meters every day to get revenge, and despite a close race with the strong opponent Genenger (Germany), she won by one stroke. It is well known that NHK announcer Kasai, who was broadcasting the event live, cheered on Maehata, saying, "Go Maehata!" She married and took the surname Hyodo. In April 1983 (Showa 58), she collapsed from a cerebral hemorrhage while teaching a swimming class, but returned to society after a year of fighting the illness. In 1981, she became the first Japanese woman to receive the Olympic Award for Merit (Silver Award).
