Japanese: 俗楽旋律考 - ぞくがくせんりつこう

A theoretical book on Japanese music. Written by Uehara Rokushiro. Published in 1895. The first full-scale study on scales in traditional Japanese music. Despite the fact that Western music had only just been introduced, this was an extremely scientific study and built an important foundation for today's research. This study made some excellent discoveries, such as the existence of two types of scales, yin and yang, in folk music, and the fact that it is a pentatonic scale. However, it has been criticized for a number of shortcomings, including the resulting confusion of the concepts of mode and scale, and errors due to a lack of data on folk songs.

日本音楽の理論書。上原六四郎著。 1895年刊。最初の本格的な日本伝統音楽の音階に関する研究書。洋楽が入ってまもないにもかかわらずきわめて科学的な研究で，今日の研究の重要な基礎を築いた。この研究で俗楽に陰陽の2種類の音階があること，また五音音階であることなどのすぐれた発見がなされた。しかし旋法と音階の概念を混同する結果を招いたことや民謡の資料不足による誤りなど欠点を指摘される面も少くない。
