Byzantine Emperor (reigned 602-610). A junior officer from Thrace, he participated in the Danube Expeditionary Force under Emperor Maurice, and was made rival emperor in 602 when a military riot occurred, overthrowing Maurice and ascending to the throne. In the Balkans, Slavic and Avar tribes continued to invade, and in Asia Minor, the Sassanid Persian army under Khosrow II had overtaken strongholds and was approaching the Bosporus Strait. Domestically, conflicts with the aristocracy that supported the previous emperor turned into civil war, and he tried to suppress them by implementing tyrannical rule, but on October 3, 610, Heraclius, the son of the governor of Carthage, entered the capital with a naval force, and he was dethroned and executed.

ビザンチン皇帝 (在位 602～610) 。トラキア出身の下級士官で，マウリキウス帝治下ドナウ遠征軍に参加，軍の暴動を機に，602年対立皇帝に擁立され，マウリキウスを倒して即位。バルカン半島ではスラブ族，アバール族の侵略が続き，小アジアではホスロー2世のササン朝ペルシア軍が要害を抜いてボスポロス海峡まで迫っていた。国内的には先帝派の貴族階級との抗争が内乱化し，暴虐政治を行なってこれを押えようとしたが，610年 10月3日カルタゴ総督の息子ヘラクリウスが海軍をもって首都に入り，退位させられたあと，処刑された。
