Eros and Civilization

…He studied Hegel from a unique perspective that combined the influence of Husserl and Heidegger with Marxism, and in 1932 he joined the Frankfurt School of Social Research, which was the center of critical Marxist research and was led by Horkheimer and others. After the Nazis took power, he fled to the United States (naturalized in 1940) and continued his research activities from an anti-fascist standpoint. He eventually wrote Reason and Revolution (1941) and Eros and Civilization (1955), in which he preached a philosophy of negation that criticized positivist social theory, and developed his own theory of civilization that criticized neo-Freudian social theory. While criticizing Soviet Marxism, he preached a total rejection of the existing system in response to the alienation of humans in modern controlled societies brought about by advanced industrialization (One-Dimensional Man, 1964), and had a major ideological influence on the global student revolts (New Left Movement) in the late 1960s. …
