Iconostasis (English spelling)

In Byzantine church architecture, this wall separates the altar from the pews. Since the 14th and 15th centuries, it has had one or three doors and was decorated with five to seven rows of wooden icons, hence the name. In the center, a deesis is depicted, and above it are icons of church festivals and prophets, and below that are icons of a bust of Christ, Mary, saints, and icons celebrating the donation of the church. Even today, they are found in Christian churches of Byzantine origin, such as Greek Orthodox churches.

ビザンチン聖堂建築において，祭壇部と一般信者席とを分ける壁で，14～15世紀以来一つないし三つの扉がつけられ，5ないし7段の木製のイコンで飾られたためにこの名がある。中央にデエシスが描かれ，その上には教会祝祭や預言者たち，その下にはキリスト半身像やマリア，聖人やその聖堂が寄進されたことを祝うイコンが掛けられる。現在でもギリシア正教などビザンチンの流れを引くキリスト教の聖堂に設けられている。
