Europa is one of Jupiter's four major moons. It was discovered by Galileo in 1610. It is the second closest of the four major moons to Jupiter after Io, orbiting the planet at a distance of 671,000 km from its center with a period of 3.5512 days. When Jupiter is at opposition, its brightness as seen from Earth is magnitude 6. Europa's diameter is estimated to be 3,130 km, and its density is estimated to be about 3.0. The Voyager spacecraft discovered that its surface is covered with ice, with few craters but many irregular striated patterns. [Sadao Murayama] Jupiter's second moon. Diameter 3,130 km.
