The name was inherited by the current Futa area of Chofu City, Tokyo, and refers to the area including the neighboring areas of Chofugaoka, Kojimacho, and others. It was once part of Tama District, Musashi Province, and some say it originates from the ancient Tama District Nitta-go (Wamyo Ruijusho), which has the reading "Ifuta," but this is uncertain. The current Futa Tenjin Shrine in Chofugaoka 1-chome is an ancient shrine that is identified with the Futa Tenjin Shrine in Tama District, which is listed in the Engishiki Shinmeicho. During the Edo period, the Koshu Road crossed the area, and Futa Post Station was established to connect Takaido Post Station (present-day Suginami Ward) in the east with Fuchu Post Station (present-day Fuchu City) in the west. Futa Post Station is the collective name for five post stations, Kokuryo Post Station, Shimo Futa Post Station, Kami Futa Post Station (Kojimabunmuraga Post Station), Shimo Ishihara Post Station, and Kami Ishihara Post Station, which are in order from east to west, and were also called the Fuda Five Post Stations. The rows of houses continue uninterrupted for about 20 blocks between Kokuryo-juku and Kamiishiwara-juku, and five of the post towns were responsible for the carriage service six days a month each. According to the "General Register of Post Towns," none of the post towns had a honjin or wakihonjin, but each post town had a wholesaler, including Kojimamura in Kajuku, and there were four inns in Kamiishiwara-juku, three in Shimofuda-juku, one each in Kokuryo-juku and Kamifuda-juku, but none in Shimofuda-juku. In 1889, the five Fuda post towns, Kojimabunmura, and two other villages merged to form Chofu-cho.

現在の東京都調布市布田に引き継がれ，同所を含み隣接する調布ヶ丘・小島町ほか一帯をさした地名。かつては武蔵国多摩郡のうちで，〈爾布多〉の訓がある古代の多摩郡新田郷（《和名類聚抄》）に由来する地名とする説もあるが，定かではない。なお現調布ヶ丘１丁目の布多(ふだ)天神社は《延喜式》神名帳に記載される多摩郡の〈布多天神社〉に比定される古社である。江戸時代には地域を甲州道中が横断，東方の高井戸宿（現杉並区）と西方の府中宿（現府中市）との間を継ぎ送る布田宿が置かれた。布田宿は東から順に続く国領(こくりょう)宿・下布田宿・上布田宿（小島分村が加宿）・下石原宿・上石原宿の計５宿の総称で，布田五宿ともよんだ。国領宿〜上石原宿間の20町ほどは家並みが途切れることなく続き，伝馬役は５宿が月のうち６日ずつを負担。《宿村大概帳》によると本陣・脇本陣はいずれの宿にもなかったが，問屋は加宿の小島村を含め各宿にあり，旅籠屋は上石原宿４軒，下布田宿３軒，国領宿・上布田宿各１軒で，下石原宿にはなかった。1889年布田五宿および小島分村ほか２ヵ村が合併して調布町が成立。
