Canaletto - Kanaletto (English spelling)

Giovanni Antonio Canal was an 18th-century Italian painter. His real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal. He was born in Venice on October 28th and died there on April 20th, 1768. His father, Bernardo Canal, was a background painter for the theatre, and there are records of his assistance from 1716. After visiting Rome in 1719, he registered with the Venetian painters' guild in 1720, and his first work with a definite date was the series "Tombstone" in 1722. Influenced by the Dutch painters Vanvitelli and Carlevaris, he painted four landscapes of Venice (1725-26) for Stefano Conti in Lucca, and thereafter became famous as a painter of veduta (city views). Works such as "The Stonemason's Workshop" (c. 1726-30, National Gallery, London) show free brushwork and subtle contrasts of light and shadow. Not only did he use a camera obscura to paint many realistic landscapes, but he also created Capricci paintings of scenes that do not exist in reality. He became acquainted with Joseph Smith, who later became the British Consul, and after 1846 he visited England many times to paint landscapes. In 1863 he became a member of the Academy. He had a strong influence on his nephew Bellotto (who was also known as Canaletto) and Guardi.

18世紀イタリアの画家。本名はジョバンニ・アントニオ・カナルGiovanni Antonio Canal。10月28日ベネチアに生まれ、1768年4月20日同地で没した。父ベルナルド・カナルは芝居の背景画家であり、その手伝いをした記録が1716年から残っている。19年ローマ訪問後、20年ベネチアの画家組合に登録、年代の確かな最初の作品は22年の『墓碑』連作画である。オランダ人のバンビテッリVanvitelliやカルレバリスCarlevarisなどから影響を受け、4枚のベネチア景観図（1725～26）をルッカのステファノ・コンティのために描き、これ以後ベドゥータ（都市の眺望画）の画家として有名になる。『石屋の作業場』（1726～30ころ。ロンドン・ナショナル・ギャラリー）などの作品には自由な筆致と光と影の微妙なコントラストがみられる。カメラ・オブスキュラを使い写実的な実景画を多数描いただけでなく、現実には存在しない配置の絵（カプリッチ）も制作している。後のイギリス領事ジョセフ・スミスの知遇を得、46年以後たびたびイギリスを訪れて風景画を描いた。63年アカデミー会員となる。甥(おい)のベロット（通称は同じカナレット）やグァルディなどに強い影響を与えた。
