A city in northern Fujian Province, China. Population 490,000 (1994). Located at the confluence of Songxi and Jianxi (Nanpu River), a tributary of the Min River, the city has been a key transportation hub connecting Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Fujian since ancient times. The character "Jian" in Fujian Province comes from Jianzhou (Jianning Prefecture), which was established here. In the 3rd year of Yong'an in the Wu Dynasty of the Three Kingdoms (260), Jian'an County was established here and became the prefecture of Jian'an County. This prefecture was renamed Jianzhou during the Sui and Tang dynasties, and was promoted to Jianning Prefecture in the Southern Song Dynasty and continued to exist in the Qing Dynasty. In 1066 (Zhiping 3) during the Northern Song Dynasty, Ouning County was separated, and until the reforms of 1913, Jianning Prefecture consisted of two counties: Jian'an and Ouning.
