Okawachi

Japanese:
Okawachi
A place name in Iitaka District, Ise Province, which is now Okawachi Town, Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture. It is located where the Sakanai River flows into the Ise Plain. In the late Middle Ages, the Kitabatake clan, the governor of Ise Province, who stayed in Tage, Ichishi District (now Misugi Town, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture) near the border between Ise and Yamato, established an administrative base in charge of the plains, making it a strategic political and military location. The Okawachi clan, whose ancestor was Kitabatake Mitsumasa's younger brother Akimasa, lived here until the Eiroku period (1558-1570) as one of the so-called Three Imperial Palaces (Okawachi, Sakanai, Tamaru), and it was commonly known as the Okawachi Imperial Palace. Because the Okawachi clan had a close relationship with the main Kitabatake family, Okawachi was considered the main castle administratively. When Oda Nobunaga invaded southern Ise in 1569, Kitabatake Tomonori and Tomonori were defeated and were forced to accept Nobunaga's second son, Nobuo, as the successor to the Kitabatake clan. The large ruins of Okawachi Castle remain on the right bank of the Sakanai River. The castle grounds, measuring 360m east to west and 320m north to south, include the remains of the main citadel, second citadel, and western citadel, as well as the remains of a storeroom and horse riding grounds. In the early modern period, Okawachi Village was part of the Matsusaka domain of the Wakayama domain, and was known for its cotton and tobacco.
