David O. Selznick

American filmmaker. One of the leading independent producers of Hollywood's Golden Age. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After learning about film from his father, who was also a filmmaker, in 1926 he became assistant producer in the B-movie division at MGM under his father's former partner, Louis Burt Mayer (1884-1957). He then worked at Paramount, and in 1931 he became vice president of production at RKO, and in 1933 he returned to MGM as a producer. In 1936 he founded his own production company, Selznick International. He produced many successful works with his unique production method, which strongly controls everything from planning to scriptwriting, filming, editing, and advertising. His culmination of his work, Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, who was invited from England, both won Academy Awards for Best Picture. After the war, he expanded into Europe and began co-productions. His representative works include "Dinner at Eight" (1933), "A Star is Born" (1937), "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1937), "After the Golden Glove" (1944), and "Duel in the Daylight" (1946).
