A collective term for a group of ruins located within the Tama New Town project site in western Tokyo. The planned area is on the right bank of the Tama River, and in the northwest of the Tama Hills, spanning the four cities of Tama, Hachioji, Inagi, and Machida, covering a vast area of approximately 14 km east to west and 2 to 4 km north to south, covering an area of approximately 3,000 ha. Since 1965, distribution surveys and excavation surveys have been continuously carried out, and approximately 850 ruins from the Pre-Pottery period to the Jomon, Yayoi, Kofun, and Historical periods have been identified, and the actual nature of the ruins is gradually becoming clear. Looking at these, while documents for the Pre-Pottery period are fragmentary and details are unknown, it is recognized that there were several turning points in the movement of the ruins from the Jomon period onwards, such as an increase and decrease in the number of ruins.
