Atawulf - Ataulf (English spelling)

King of the Visigoths (reigned 410-415). After the death of his brother-in-law Alaric, who led the Visigoths into Italy, he was chosen as king. He attempted to lead his subjects to Africa but failed, and then marched north and invaded southern France in 412. He first allied with Jovinus, who pretended to be emperor of Gaul, but later switched sides to the Western Roman Emperor Honorius, occupying Aquitania and marrying the emperor's sister Placidia, who was a hostage, in 414, with the intention of establishing an independent kingdom. However, he was driven out of Aquitania by the Western Roman general Constantius, who was ordered by the emperor, and advanced into Spain, which was occupied by the Vandals, and established a kingdom there in 415, but was killed by his servants in Barcelona in the same year.

西ゴート国王（在位410～415）。西ゴート人を率いてイタリアに侵入した義兄弟アラリックの死後、王に選ばれ、臣民を率いてアフリカに渡ろうとしたが失敗、北進して412年南フランスに侵入した。最初はガリアの皇帝僭称(せんしょう)者ヨウィヌスと結んだが、のち西ローマ皇帝ホノリウスの側に寝返り、アクィタニア地方を占拠するとともに、414年人質の皇帝の妹プラキディアと結婚して、独立王国の樹立を意図した。しかし、皇帝の命を受けた西ローマの将軍コンスタンティウスにより、アクィタニア地方から駆逐され、バンダル人の占領していたスペインに進出、415年ここに王国を建てたが、同年バルセロナで家来に殺害された。
