…English clergyman and naturalist. While serving as assistant curate in his hometown of Selborne, located about 80 km southwest of London, he was passionate about observing nature, and for about 20 years he continued to report his findings in the form of letters to naturalist Thomas Pennant (1726-98) and others. His work, Selborne Natural History (1789), a compilation of these letters, is a classic of natural history literature, combining a beautiful style with a sharp observational eye, and is also a masterpiece, along with I. Walton's The Compendium of the Angler, as a collection of essays by a recluse who retired from political strife and enjoyed nature. …
