Also called kung fu movies. Kung fu (kung fu) means martial arts in southern China, and refers to movies (kung fu films) that feature Chinese martial arts. It mainly refers to films made in Hong Kong. Kung fu movies were most popular in Japan and the United States in the 1970s, and in Japan, the boom was sparked by the release of Enter the Dragon (1973), in which Bruce Lee performs amazing action. After that, Lee's early death caused a temporary decline in popularity, but with the birth of a new star, Jackie Chan, Hong Kong kung fu movies regained their vitality and have continued to do so to this day. クンフー映画ともいう。カンフー (功夫) とは中国南部で武術を意味し,中国武術による立ち回りを売り物にした映画 (功夫片) のこと。主として香港製のものを指す。日本やアメリカでカンフー映画が最も人気を集めたのは 1970年代で,日本では,ブルース・リーが驚異的なアクションを繰り広げる『燃えよドラゴン』 (1973年) の公開により,一気にブームに火がついた。その後,リーが夭逝 (ようせつ) したこともあって,一時,人気にかげりが生じたが,ジャッキー・チェンという新しいスターの誕生で,香港功夫映画は再び活気を取り戻し,現在に至っている。
