A two-act play by American playwright Arthur Miller. The protagonist, Willy Loman, is an old salesman who cannot adapt to the changes of the new era. As he falls out of society, he loses his mental balance and the dreams he entrusted to his two sons are shattered. After failing at everything, he finally realizes his true nature and commits suicide by driving his car out of control in order to collect the insurance money. This work was first performed in February 1949 at the Morozko Theater in New York under the direction of Elia Kazan, and recorded a long run of 742 performances until November of the following year. Borrowing the form of a story of humans overwhelmed by the gigantic capitalist machinery, it applied the ideas of Greek tragedy to the image of ordinary people in modern times, and depicted the theme of "the gap between dreams and reality" through a bold theatrical development that made full use of flashback techniques, achieving great success. The most famous performance in Japan was by the Mingei Theatre Company, starring Takizawa Osamu. It premiered in 1954 (Showa 29).
