Death of a Salesman

A two-act play by American playwright Arthur Miller. The protagonist, Willy Loman, is an old salesman who cannot adapt to the changes of the new era. As he falls out of society, he loses his mental balance and the dreams he entrusted to his two sons are shattered. After failing at everything, he finally realizes his true nature and commits suicide by driving his car out of control in order to collect the insurance money.

This work was first performed in February 1949 at the Morozko Theater in New York under the direction of Elia Kazan, and recorded a long run of 742 performances until November of the following year. Borrowing the form of a story of humans overwhelmed by the gigantic capitalist machinery, it applied the ideas of Greek tragedy to the image of ordinary people in modern times, and depicted the theme of "the gap between dreams and reality" through a bold theatrical development that made full use of flashback techniques, achieving great success. The most famous performance in Japan was by the Mingei Theatre Company, starring Takizawa Osamu. It premiered in 1954 (Showa 29).

アメリカの劇作家アーサー・ミラーの二幕戯曲。主人公ウィリー・ローマンは新時代の変化に対応できない老セールスマン。社会から脱落するにつれて精神の平衡を失い、2人の息子に託した夢も破れる。すべてに挫折(ざせつ)して初めて自己の実体に気づいた彼は、保険金目当てに自動車を暴走させ自殺する。

　この作品は1949年2月、ニューヨークのモロスコ劇場でエリア・カザン演出により上演され、翌年11月まで742回のロング・ランを記録した。巨大な資本主義機構に打ちひしがれる人間の物語の形を借りて、ギリシア悲劇の理念を現代の平凡な人間像に生かし、「夢と現実の乖離(かいり)」の主題を、フラッシュ・バックの手法を駆使した大胆な舞台展開のもとに描き、大きな成功を収めた。なお、日本における上演は劇団民芸が滝沢修主演で行ったものが有名。初演は1954年（昭和29）。
